Chapter Ten
Carter was already in a foul mood, had been since yesterday when Molly had left him alone at the creek bed, and standing here listening to Wilcox prattle on about his wife was making it worse by the second. He was impatient too, wanted to get this meeting with Fredrickson over. Molly had been avoiding him all day, and although he had expected that from the Molly he’d first met, he didn’t expect it from the one he now knew. Nor did he like it.
“Women are fickle creatures,” Wilcox said. “What pleased them yesterday won’t please them today.”
Carter scowled at the man’s back, half contemplating what he’d said. There was a lot to learn about women and such. It wasn’t something he’d ever needed before, but Wilcox’s bitter tone didn’t suggest his lessons would be worth listening to. Therefore, Carter didn’t listen. When it came to Molly, he needed the right advice.
Looking out the second-story window, he peered down the tracks. It was already well past midnight. “You’re sure his train’s coming in tonight?”
“Yes, it’ll be along soon,” Wilcox said. “It’s running off the schedule, just a few cars and Fredrickson’s private coach, so it can only roll while the tracks are free.”
Carter left the window as the man took to prattling again, this time about rail schedules. Taking a seat on a chair in front of the mahogany desk, Carter tilted his hat to shield his face from the wall lanterns lighting the office. As soon as his lids closed, a picture formed.
Molly.
He’d become quite obsessed with her, had grown committed to helping her, too, which was proving to be rather difficult. She didn’t want his help. Truth was, he had no idea what she did want.
When she’d asked about Montana, he’d thought it was because she wanted him to take her there, but when he had told her he would, she’d said no. What was a man to think about that? Other than it had been a stupid offer. He had nothing in Montana. No place to live, no way to make a living. And a woman needed both. A house and an income. That’s what it took to raise a family. A street orphan understood that deeper than most. He also couldn’t let her give up all she had. Land. The mercantile. Friends and family. No one in their right mind would do that.
Molly was confused, he understood that. And scared. He still believed there was more behind her fear. Being unwed and pregnant was enough, but there was more, and solving that mystery was becoming first and foremost. That’s where he was at. Unsure. And it didn’t settle well with him.
“There it is,” Wilcox said with a portion of relief.
Carter rose from his chair and followed the other man out of the office, ready to get this night over with. He and Wilcox were on the platform when the train approached. There was no whistle blowing, just the chug of the engine and the hiss of the brakes.
